One quality that many Sunday Afternoon Live performances share is that each is a juxtaposition: A set of contrasts, a presentation of opposites. Tel Aviv Wind Quintet is a real
juxtaposition of classical chops and theatrical whimsy. Yes, Tel Aviv Wind Quintet is a collective of award-winning and internationally-recognized classical musicians. But are you
prepared for an ensemble that frolics onstage, wearing swim flippers, tossing ball caps, using their instruments as props (like oars)? In pieces such as “Peter And The Wolf”, and Berio’s
comic “Barn Dance”, the players of Tel Aviv Wind Quintet turn music into theatre and bring the audience right along with them. Listening to show-stoppers like Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue”,
we are swept along dizzyingly, but these masters of precision are in complete control. Somehow, they are able to weave beauty, pathos, and humor together as each piece unfolds.
As critic Pamela Hickman notes, Tell Aviv Wind Quintet is “polished, whimsical, and suitably teasing” (2020).
Tel Aviv Wind Quintet was founded in 2009 by five young Israeli musicians who were not only interested in sharing a stellar classical repertoire, but also exploring different musical and
theatrical genres. The result is a completely unique performance experience that has entranced audiences in Europe, the US, Canada, and Israel. Critics have called these artists “the best
wind players in Israel” (Haggai Hitron in Haaretz, 2014), and noted that “the long and loud applause did not let the players get off the stage” (Stadtzeitung Bad-Neuenahr Ahrweiler, 2018).
