U.S. Highway 101 is closed south of Wheeler tonight and through tomorrow morning because of an active landslide.

The landslide began early this morning near milepost 47 in Tillamook County. State road crews tried several times to reopen a lane on the highway today only to have more rocks and material flow down.

This afternoon, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Transportation told KMUN that the landslide is still moving.

State geologists were on site today. The area will need to be stabilized and the debris cleared before the highway can reopen. No homes have been impacted by the slide and no injuries were reported.

Motorists are being sent to a detour on Miami Foley Road, but the detour has length limits. Longer trucks are advised to take alternate routes.
