Takashi Makino captures video of ready-made objects including natural phenomena, human, and cities with various film formats, and layers them in elaborate configurations during the editing process. They burst perpetually with detail and movement, creating an almost a psychedelic experience for the viewer.
His organic yet imaginative films are highly regarded internationally.
Makino is currently based in Japan and presents movies, music, installation, audiovisual performances around the world. He was awarded the Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2011 and also received various awards at several international film festivals including Hamburg International Short Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival, and he also awarded the Grand Prize at 25FPS International Experimental Film and Video Festival.
His cinema works have been screened in over 120 cities around the world. Recently his work was screened in documenta 14, Athens, Greece (2017); Austrian Film Festival, Vienna, Austria (2017); New York Film Festival, New York, USA (2014, 2017); Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2016); The Korean Film Archive, Seoul, Korea (2016); BFI IMAX Theatre, London, UK (2016); MoMAPS1, New York, USA (2013); San Francisco MoMA, USA (2009); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, USA (2008).
