Students will explore form, surface, and illustration through the creation of a soft-slab cup. Session One begins with designing and hand-building your cup using soft slabs while we discuss functional forms and approaches to planning surface imagery. After lunch, we’ll return to apply a base coat of underglaze to the freshly made piece. You’ll learn how to bring your design to life using sgraffito. The class will include a demonstration on carving illustrations through the underglaze layer, as well as how to transfer a printed image onto your cup to guide your carving. By the end of the class, you’ll have a fully decorated piece that beautifully blends form and storytelling through surface design.
