In this workshop, students will build whimsical ceramic creatures designed specifically to respond beautifully to raku glazes and firing techniques. Using coil and sculptural handbuilding methods, participants will create expressive forms with plenty of surface area to showcase the dramatic crackle, metallic flashes, and smoky effects characteristic of raku.
The focus will be on strong construction, playful character, and intentional surfaces that enhance the unpredictability and energy of the raku process.
The raku firing will take place on 6/7, and participants are highly encouraged to attend in order to glaze their creatures and experience the firing process firsthand.
Students will leave class with their pieces ready for drying and preparation for the upcoming raku firing.
