North Coast Ceasefire Now and KALA Present Free Screening of Palestine 36
ASTORIA, Ore. — North Coast Ceasefire Now and KALA will host a free community screening of the acclaimed film Palestine 36 on Sunday, June 14th at 5:00pm at KALA in Astoria. Doors open at 4:30pm with food and beverages available for purchase.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion and Q&A featuring representatives from Jewish Voice for Peace and members of the Arab American League.
Palestine 36 is a historical drama set during the Arab Revolt of 1936–1939, the largest and longest uprising against British colonial rule in Palestine during Britain’s three-decade mandate. The film received a 20-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as Palestine’s official submission for the 98th Academy Awards.
Palestinian writer and director Annemarie Jacir describes the film as “a nod to the persistence of the human spirit, of the desire of a people to be free. It is our story.”
According to organizers, the screening is intended to encourage reflection on the role of ordinary people in responding to injustice and human suffering. North Coast Ceasefire Now views the film as an opportunity to explore historical and contemporary questions surrounding colonialism, displacement, human rights, and civic engagement.
“Although we are separated by geography and history from the events portrayed in the film, we are connected through our shared humanity and our collective future,” organizers said. “The children of Astoria and the children of Palestine will inherit the same planet. We believe every person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, safety, and freedom, and we encourage community members to learn, engage in dialogue, and participate in the democratic process.”
The event is free and open to the public.
