Two apply for vacant city council seat

Two people have officially applied to represent the eastern side of Astoria on the Astoria City Council.

Joshua Conklin, who ran unsuccessfully for City Council in 2020, and retired Costco executive Mike Brosius are both looking to land the Ward 4 seat previously occupied by Vance Lump.

Lump was elected in 2024. He campaigned on a platform that focused almost exclusively on workforce and affordable housing concerns in Astoria. He announced last month that he would be resigning effective Nov. 1 because he could not find housing in his budget in the ward he represented.

Now the Astoria City Council will appoint his replacement. Possible candidates for the Ward 4 seat have until Nov. 10 to submit their applications.

At a meeting this week, Mayor Sean Fitzpatrick said he had talked to at least two other people who intend to apply.

The City Council plans to host a meet-and-greet for prospective candidates after the application period has closed. That event will be held on Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Peace First Lutheran Church, which is located in Ward 4.

The meet-and-greet is expected to include a time when candidates will formally introduce themselves and answer questions delivered by a moderator. This will be followed by an informal time when candidates will be able to interact one-on-one with consituents.
