CANNON BEACH BUILDING REGULATIONS ON COUNCIL AGENDA
Cannon Beach’s building regulations will come under scrutiny beginning Tuesday night when the City Council meets in a work session beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting is available via Zoom. The link is below and available on the city’s website. The meeting agenda and information packet also are on the website.
A staff report from planning director Jeff Adams notes that there is evidence that “Cannon Beach has reached a point in its lifecycle at which most or all of the readily developable lots have been built out.
“Due to the desirability of living and owning (property) in Cannon Beach, the pressure to build new and larger structures will not abate,” the report continues. “When that occurs, two things will happen:
1. Lots previously considered to be “unbuildable” will start submitting elaborate engineering designs to overcome what were previously thought to be economically insurmountable construction challenges;
2. Prospective new owners will look at the economic viability of buying one or more lots that currently have homes on them and remove the existing structures to create a clear building site to accommodate their wishes.”
The staff is concerned, the report says, that the city’s regulations “may not have adequate protections to ensure that the coming development/redevelopment will support and enhance the ambiance and character for which Cannon Beach has become known.”
During the work session, the staff will present suggestions about how the community can participate in a discussion of this issue and “make decisions about how development/redevelopment could be managed in the future.”
