Author and maritime researcher Captain Daniel Marvin presents the “Amazing Life of the Ottilie Fjord” at the October 16th TNT (Thursday Night Talks).

The Ottilie Fjord, a storied lumber schooner built in 1892, was named after Ottilie Fjord, niece of prominent Astorian businessman Martin Foard, co-founder of the historic Foard and Stokes Mercantile and Furniture Store. The ship’s legacy spans decades of Pacific trade, Arctic exploration, and even Hollywood film appearances under its later name, Nanuk.

Captain Marvin’s presentation will delve into the ship’s dramatic voyages—from lumber runs along the West Coast to perilous rescues off Honolulu, and its transformation into a trading vessel that survived tidal waves and Arctic storms. Attendees will also learn about the ship’s role in transporting valuable cargo and its connection to legendary arctic pilot Carl Ben Eielson.

This presentation promises to be a compelling journey through maritime history, local heritage, and the enduring spirit of exploration. For more information about TNT, please call 503-325-2203 or e-mail info@astoriamuseums.org.
