Take your ceramics to the next level by learning how to build and decorate your own illustrated cup from start to finish.  This workshop is led by Christian Casas, a Cuban American interdisciplinary artist and educator whose ceramic practice explores illustration, memory, and layered surface decoration through handbuilt clay.  Students will explore handbuilding techniques, inlay, and underglaze transfer to create richly layered surfaces inspired by drawing, pattern, and storytelling.  Whether you’re new to clay or looking to expand your surface decoration skills, this workshop will introduce techniques that can be applied to future ceramic projects.

Students will walk away with:

A handbuilt, fully illustrated ceramic cup designed by you.
A strong understanding of handbuilding and inlay techniques.
Experience using underglaze transfer to create layered, expressive imagery.
Practical surface decoration techniques that can be applied to functional ware and sculptural ceramics.
Greater confidence in translating your drawings and ideas into clay.
Cups will be clear glazed, fired and ready for pickup or shipping within 3-4 weeks from class.

Christian Casas is a Cuban American artist, educator, and curator from Hialeah, Florida.  His multidisciplinary practice explores intergenerational memory, diaspora, grief, labor, and personal mythology through ceramics, sculpture, drawing, pyrography, printmaking, installation, and found materials.  Drawing from family archives, devotional imagery, folk traditions, and handmade craft processes, his work investigates how identity is shaped through inheritance, displacement, and remembrance.
Casas received his MFA in Sculpture from The Ohio State University in 2022 and his BA from University of Florida in 2017. His work has been exhibited nationally in New York, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Utah, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Chicago.
