An Astoria man jumped from the Astoria-Megler Bridge Friday night.
He was recovered from the Columbia River nine minutes after he jumped, but could not be revived.
Because of the nature of the incident, the Astoria Police Department has said it will not be releasing the 35-year-old man’s name.
Police responded to the bridge after receiving reports at 8:24 p.m. that a man had stopped his vehicle at the highest point of the bridge and then jumped.
Port of Astoria security personnel and Astoria police officers launched a port vessel and brought the man out of the river at approximately 8:35 p.m.
The bridge has seen a number of suicides and suspected suicides over the years.
In 2022, following one death by suicide, another suspected suicide and two close calls, state and county officials discussed possible steps to reduce the risk of suicides at the bridge.
Signs at either end of the bridge provide drivers with a crisis hotline number — though, in the past, people have pushed unsuccessfully for more signs along the Megler’s entire 4.1-mile span.
