This spring, the Seaside Public Library invited the community to take part in “One Book, One Coast”, a shared reading initiative that connected more than 130 library systems across California, Oregon, and Washington.
As the largest book club on the West Coast, “One Book, One Coast” brought readers together around one book to create opportunities for conversation, reflection, and meaningful connection across neighborhoods, cities, and state lines. The Seaside Public Library and its partners read and discussed “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei, Steven Scott, and Justin Eisinger, and illustrated by Harmony Becker.
Through this shared reading experience, communities were encouraged to explore themes of identity, patriotism, family, loyalty, and resilience while strengthening connections through dialogue and learning.
In April the Library offered two opportunities for the community to come together and discuss the book. To close the program, George Takei will appear for a lecture and book signing on Sunday, May 31st at 2:00pm at East Los Angeles Library. The event will be livestreamed, allowing readers across the region to participate together.
The Seaside Library Friends & Foundation invites you to attend the livestreamed event and to join in the fun at the Seaside Public Library in the Community Room.
