Washington homicide suspect killed by police in Seaside

A suspect in two homicides in Washington state is dead after a shoot out with police in Seaside Wednesday evening

No other injuries were reported and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. Oregon State Police is leading an investigation into the incident.

According to the agency, the man shot by police was 24-year-old Hayes Miles McCloud of Eatonville, Wash. He had been identified as a person of interest in two homicide investigations in Washington Wednesday morning. Investigators believed he was heading toward Oregon.

That evening, the Seaside Police Department found McCloud inside his vehicle on Sunset Boulevard in Seaside. After officers from other departments arrived to assist, McCloud allegedly fired at the officers. Police officers from Gearhart and Cannon Beach shot back. McCloud drove off, but was found dead in his car not far away.

That evening, people in Clatsop County received emergency alerts through the Clatsop Alerts system. They were told to avoid the area around the Cove, at the southern end of Seaside. Residents on Sunset Boulevard were advised to shelter in place because of ongoing police activity.

This advisory was lifted around 7:30 p.m. though people were still cautioned to avoid the Cove area.

A spokesperson for the city of Seaside told KMUN there is no threat to the community now. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and no further details were available at this time.
