Presented in partnership with Fort George Brewery – Thursday Night Lecture Series
People have been philosophizing in cultures and conversations across the world for millennia. But what happens when people philosophizing in one culture encounter the ideas of others? Can thinkers borrow ideas from cultures other than their own without exploiting or appropriating them? Are there things that simply can’t be philosophically understood or appreciated outside of their cultural context? How do we respect the ideas, beliefs, values, and assertions of another culture while still maintaining the critical mindset that helps make philosophy? And, looking forward, what sorts of things can emerge from cross-cultural philosophies?
