SUMMARY:What is Native Art? Eugene Landry and the Creative Spirit Exhibitio
 n
DESCRIPTION:Eugene “Gene” Landry (1937-1988) was a noted Northwest Nati
 ve artist who painted from his wheelchair. His personal story is one of pe
 rseverance\, of an artist who created despite setbacks\, always with humor
  and style.\nLandryʼs art offers a glimpse into a transitional and little
 -documented time in Northwest Native history. His paintings represent a Na
 tive artist’s portrayal of his own people during a time when Native Amer
 icans were erased\, marginalized\, and misrepresented by stereotypes in me
 dia and public education. Landry painted contemporary portraits of his peo
 ple\, depicting them as they were.\nFor a variety of reasons—timing\, ge
 ographic isolation\, physical barriers due to his disability\, marginaliza
 tion of Native Americans in mainstream culture—Landry's art did not rece
 ive the recognition it deserved during his lifetime. This exhibition bring
 s his work—and life—to light.\nLearn about Landry’s creativity\, spi
 rit\, and legacy in this exhibition organized by Judith Altruda and the Wa
 shington State History Museum on view at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Mus
 eum in Ilwaco from August 15th - November 1st\, 2025. There will be an ope
 ning reception on August 15th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with a special welcome
