The mandolin, a popular modern instrument very prominent in bluegrass and some genres of European folk music, has an interesting, if somewhat confusing, lineage. In this discussion/concert, period mandolinist Hideki Yamaya will demonstrate three historical mandolins : the ‘mandore’; the Baroque 6-course mandolin; and the Lombard mandolin. The repertoire will cover music from France, Germany, Italy, and Scotland, from the 17th- through 19th-centuries. The show will be one hour long without intermission.
