 al gallery talk with Judith Altruda\, Curator of What is Native Art? Eugen
 e Landry and the Creative Spirit.\nEugene Landry (1937-1988) was a noted N
 orthwest Native artist who painted from his wheelchair. His personal story
  is one of perseverance\, of an artist who created despite setbacks\, alwa
 ys with humor and style.\nIn 2019\, Tokeland and Astoria based artist Judi
 th Altruda found a large collection of Eugene Landry’s art inside an unh
 eated storage building. It had been sitting there for almost 25 years. She
  bought the collection to save it from ruin and was so taken with his art 
 and life story that she wrote a book about Gene's life\, A Portrait of Gen
 e\, an Artist\, a Time and a Tribe. She is currently working on a second b
 ook about Gene’s life. Since 2019\, more art has surfaced\, from private
  collections and elsewhere. Like puzzle pieces\, each work expands and fil
 ls in more of Gene’s story.\nThe Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is ope
