SUMMARY:Function and Form: Off-the-Hump Throwing and Decorative Vases w/Nat
 ional Visiting Artist\, Johnny Arvizu
DESCRIPTION:This one-day class will focus on the relationship between funct
 ion and form. We’ll cover the off-the-hump throwing method\, a useful ap
 proach for efficiently creating smaller pieces with precision. The session
  will also include techniques for making decorative vases\, emphasizing fo
 rm\, and balance\nJohnny Arvizu grew up in Douglas\, Arizona\, a small bor
 der town neighboring Agua Prieta\, Mexico. He began working in ceramics in
  2017 at Cochise Community College\, where he was introduced to soda and w
 ood firing. The seemingly endless possibilities within these atmospheric f
 iring methods sparked a lasting passion for soda firing. Johnny later tran
 sferred to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff\, Arizona\, where he e
 arned his BFA in 2023. He has since taught several workshops across the U.
 S. and plans to pursue a Master’s degree in the near future.
