TITLE: WHAT IS RELIGION FOR?

Religious beliefs, practices, and experiences form a cornerstone of human life and culture. On the one hand, religion can be a basic source of comfort, inspiration, and purpose for people, particularly during times of uncertainty or stress. At the same time, religion has been the cause of some of humanity’s worst characteristics – superstition, bigotry, intolerance, and war. How are we to reconcile these qualities? What is the place of religion in our modern age, and what can or should it do (or not do) for us today? And, for that matter, what exactly is “religion” anyway?
