SUMMARY:Deep Dive: Stories of Forests and Water
DESCRIPTION:Join North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) o
 n Monday\, September 16\, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at KALA (1017 Marine Dr.\;
Astoria\, OR 97103) for an evening of storytelling. Doors open at 5:30pm
for socializing\, refreshments\, and chowder bowls!\nThe upcoming event en
titled “DEEP DIVE: STORIES OF FORESTS &amp\; WATER” features two modes
of storytelling: a reading by writer\, artist\, and activist Roger Dorban
d\, and a screening of documentary filmmaker Jesse Clark’s “LIVING LEG
 ACIES.”\nAbout the Presenters\nRoger Dorband’s forest activism began s
everal years ago after discovering new and massive clearcuts along Highway
26\, where once was an intact forest. Sickened\, he channeled his shock i
nto action: Dorband began studying Oregon forest management and various as
pects of forest silviculture. His research and passion connected him with
others with similar interests and goals.\nDorband spent half a decade as c
o-lead to the Forest Interest Group in Astoria\, which successfully convin
ced Clatsop County Commissioners not to sign onto the billion dollar Linn
County timber lawsuit. When the group dissolved\, Dorband and two other ac
tivists formed the Forest Vision Project. The Forest Vision Project brough
t a number of excellent speakers to Astoria to give talks at Clatsop Commu
nity College and mounted a major art exhibition in the gallery featuring a
rtists working with the theme of forests. Currently\, Dorband is a steerin
g committee member of the recently formed Astoria chapter of North Coast C
ommunities for Watershed Protection\, and continues to produce a prolific
number of articles related to forestry for Hipfish Monthly\, as well as nu
merous letters in the Daily Astorian.\nJesse Clark is an Emmy award-winnin
g filmmaker and cinematographer focused on our complex place in the natura
l world. His directorial debut with Shane Anderson titled CHEHALIS: A WATE
RSHED MOMENT played on PBS in over 20 states and national streaming. Clark
most recently worked as cinematographer and feature editor on the Emmy-no
minated COVENANT OF THE SALMON PEOPLE\, helping to tell the story of the N
ez Perce tribe’s ongoing fight to preserve their lifeways and sacred sal
mon.\nHe is now focused on a new series he is writing and directing\, enti
tled FOREST STORIES\, an short film series with each episode focused on a
particular issue within Pacific Northwest forestry. At the KALA Event\, we
will see the first episode of the series\, entitled LIVING LEGACIES.\nSyn
opsis for LIVING LEGACIES (23mins\, documentary short):\nA movement is bor
n when one community’s drinking water source is threatened – and Washi
ngton State must weigh economic gain against the protection of their last
tracts of carbon-sequestering mature forests.\nNorth Coast Communities for
Watershed Protection is a grassroots group that advocates for the protect
ion of drinking water on the Oregon Coast. The non-profit aims to end to l
ogging and pesticide spray within and surrounding forested drinking waters
heds in the State\, regardless of land ownership.\nWe are dealing with the
ramifications of industrial clearcutting and pesticide application. This
not only destroys our maturing and old-growth forests\, but also harms our
climate\, pollutes our air and drinking water\, and directly impacts our
health. It is NCCWP’s hope that this storytelling event will highlight t
he important relationship between our forested ecosystem and our access to
clean and abundant drinking water on the Oregon Coast.\nTo learn more abo
