SUMMARY:Coastal Futures: The Path Forward
DESCRIPTION:Live Event: NCCWP presents Coastal Futures: The Path Forward\nN
orth Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) invites the North
Coast community to participate in a live event\, “Coastal Futures: The P
ath Forward\,” presented by students in the Master of Landscape Architec
ture program at the University of Oregon.\nFor the second year\, Rockaway
Beach was the basis for research by masters students led by Ignacio López
Busón\, Assistant Professor of Climate Change Resilience at the Universi
ty of Oregon. The students analyzed Rockaway Beach as a case study for how
small\, coastal communities can improve their resiliency in the face of g
lobal climate change. Their presentation will cover:\n*Tourism: designing
 a stronger\, more balanced future.\n*Food systems: food insecurity\, acces
s and affordability.\n*Hydrology: improving resilience to flooding and pol
lution and improving water quality.\n*Ecology: regional biodiversity\, pas
t and present ecosystems\, logging impacts\, and opportunities for improvi
ng watersheds.\n*Coastal Protection: city planning in an area with unique
flooding and erosion challenges\, pathways for dealing with increased risk
from rising sea levels.\nAll community members are encouraged to attend t
o learn more about coastal sustainability issues and engage in a discussio
n about planning for a more environmentally and socially resilient future.
This is also a chance for neighboring communities to learn how this type
of analysis could be applied in their areas.\nSaturday\, April 18th at 10:
00am at St. Mary by the Sea Parish Hall\, 275 S. Pacific Street\, Rockaway
Beach\nFree admission\, coffee and light refreshments will be served.\nTh
e event will also be accessible by Zoom at:\nhttps://uoregon.zoom.us/j/972
 87806110\nFrom the study:\n“The future of Rockaway Beach’s coastline i
s in the hands of current generations. The work put in now will affect the
lives of generations down the line. What that future might look like is u
p for interpretation\, but the decisions made should ultimately be determi
ned by those whose legacies lie in Rockaway Beach.”\nNorth Coast Communi
ties for Watershed Protection wants no more logging and pesticide use in c
ommunity drinking water sources regardless of who owns the land\, and want
s an end to pesticide applications near where people live\, work\, and rec
reate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that
we all are entitled to have.\nFor more information go to our website www.
